Your Retirement Should Be As Unique As You Are!

Nancy B. Alston

Whether you’re already retired or nearing retirement age, one of the most important things you can do is to take the time to understand what you want out of life. Retirement can be the most enjoyable period of your life if you do a little planning and soul-searching to discover your inner dreams and desires. Technology has overwhelmed us with information and the sight of people looking at their phone as they’re talking to someone else has become so common, we don’t even notice it anymore. It might mean that we’ve become more interested in what’s going on in the world than what’s going on in our own life. In the process, we may be falling into the trap of looking for fulfillment outside of ourselves rather than where it truly exists: within our own being.

Each one of us is unique and most people try to get through life without fully exploring that fact. Too often we deny that we have any talents or skills that make us special. The truth is that we all are an extraordinary creation with inner desires and dreams based on our own experiences. If they take the time, everyone can point to a time in their life where they felt a true sense of accomplishment. Or they can point to the things they really enjoyed doing in their life. Perhaps it’s even a desire to try something you always wanted to do – a hidden dream. If you take the time to examine your life in a moment of silence and explore your inner being, the chances are very good that there will be something you wanted to try for the first time or go back to. Retirement is a gift and it gives you the time and the freedom to discover new things about yourself and the world you live in.

I refer to this as your Retirement Profile and it as unique as you are. It’s waiting to be explored and you’re the only one who can make that happen. And, best of all, retirement is the time to do it. Write a novel, take up painting, photography, gardening or build a house. The sky’s the limit and people are doing amazing things in their retirement based on a long-forgotten dream. Take a look around and you’ll see seniors doing all kinds of things from playing in a band to restoring automobiles. This is the time in your life to make it happen. Retirement is a chance for a new beginning and to continue to become the person you were meant to be. Take up a new interest. Travel the world. Become an artist, musician or playwright. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
