Dangerous goods are transported across the country on a daily basis by rail, air and road, constantly coming into contact with industry workers and the general public. To protect these individuals from the hazards associated with the transport of flammable, toxic, explosive, or corrosive substances, the TDG Act and Regulations were put in place.
The TDG act sets out the general guidelines and rules and the Regulations dictate the rules that apply to each mode of transport, the various classifications of hazardous goods, and the training requirements for those involved in the transportation of dangerous goods. The Regulations dictate that any individual that comes into contact with these goods during the course of their job must have the necessary training to safely handle these goods. This means that anyone that ships, offers for sale, handles, or transports these goods must have proper TDG training. The training educates individuals on the classifications of hazardous goods, the applicable legislation, reporting of incidents, the applicable fines, and the necessary documentation for transporting dangerous goods. TDG training also includes the applicable safety markings, the means of containment and the enforcement process. This training is important to ensure the safety of everyone wherever hazardous goods are being transported.
TDG training is required in order to educate individuals on the safe handling and transportation practices for hazardous goods. This ensures the safety of everyone during the transportation of dangerous goods. Transportation of Dangerous Goods training covers the classifications of hazardous goods, TDG symbols, the requirements for labeling and placards, and the requirements for hazardous goods packaging and vessels. There has some regulation for the transport of hazardous materials requires hazardous products be labeled. These regulation label specifies the colors, symbols, and design to be used when transporting these hazardous materials.
The TDG also includes information on the documentation requirements for the transport of hazardous goods and the proper response in the event of an accidental spill or release of a hazardous goods.
According to the TDG Regulations an individual must have a sound knowledge of these topics as they relate to their job and the hazardous goods they will be expected to handle in order to be considered adequately trained on the transportation of dangerous goods. Many TDG training instructors set a minimum pass mark for individuals taking their training course. This ensures that participants fully understand and have retained the necessary information to properly and safely handle hazardous goods.
Once completed, the training is valid for three (3) years from the date of completion. As the training is specific to an individual’s job and the goods they will handle for their job, an individual must take the TDG training again if their employer changes, even if their previous TDG training has not yet expired.
The list of professions that are required to take TDG training is a long one. This means that there are many students that must take this training within any one organization. Online TDG training makes training individuals easy and economical, taking away the need to organize a training class, coordinating the time and place for the training with many individuals.
